    U.S. philanthropic donations take $17B nosedive

    Giving to nonprofits in the United States plummeted during 2022, led by the disappearance of individual donors. Giving dropped to an estimated $499.33 billion – down 3.4% in current dollars and 10.5% after adjusting for inflation from a revised total of $516.65 billion in 2021.

    403(b) plan determination program now open

    As of June 1, 2023, the IRS expanded the determination letter program to include certain 403(b) plans. Plan sponsors that maintain an individually designed 403(b) plan will be permitted to submit a determination letter application for an initial plan determination based on the EIN of the plan sponsor.

    The largest point-of-sale fundraising efforts by American retailers collected $749 million in consumer donations during 2022, a 24% increase from 2020, according to the biennial Charity Checkout Champions study released by Engage for Good.
