OSCPA student ambassador takes initiative to ensure future career success

OSCPA student ambassador Cameron Musser says taking advantage of school resources has been essential to setting himself up for success after graduation.

Musser, a senior majoring in accounting and minoring in governance, risk management and compliance at Cleveland State University, credits his willingness to expose himself to new opportunities, such as building connections with his professors, for aiding in his pathway to success.

“If you get to know your professors, they'll really push you to do more than you think you can do,” he said. “If you get involved in class, raise your hand and answer questions, that helps them out. So, in return they're going to help you out a little bit more. They've had a lot of experience, so they're willing to pass on that knowledge.”

Musser attended the Accounting Careers Leadership Academy (ACLA) last November and was awarded a scholarship from William Vaughan. While there, Musser was able to see firsthand how taking initiative can pay off.

“When I was at ACLA, there was a student who raised her hand once to answer a question, and there was a recruiter next to me who wrote her name down, what school she was going to, and when she was graduating,” said Musser. “And that wouldn't have happened if she didn't raise her hand. It was a really simple moment. All she did was raise her hand and answer her question, but I think it's a good lesson to always raise your hand and get involved because people will notice that it shows initiative, and it can take you a long way.”

This year, Musser has served as a co-president of the Cleveland State chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, an international honors organization for financial information students. Musser is glad to be involved in student orgs and encourages other students to do the same.

“Get involved,” he said. “Networking is great, but the social aspect of it is nice, too. You get to meet other students that you might not meet in class, and then people that you meet in these extracurriculars that you do have class with, you strengthen those relationships and it'll pay off in the future.”

After graduating this spring, Musser will take the summer off to take the CPA exam before starting work in the fall as an audit assistant at Deloitte.
